Women’s Counseling Helpline

Access to mental health and emotional counseling services is a major challenge in the Muslim community. Barriers include social taboos, lack of cultural-religiously sensitive services, language barriers and cost. These barriers result in vulnerable persons dealing with stress, emotional pain, difficult family life, addictions, identity issues or bonafide mental health issues in isolation.

In 2014, Mercy Mission Canada launched a women’s peer-to-peer counseling helpline initiative that provides a scalable model of access to emotional counseling services through a free, confidential call-in hotline. Using IP-based telephone technology and a network of trained peer-to-peer counselors, the helpline fields hundreds of calls per month from across North America and even from other parts of the world.
